OT

March 9th, 2010

Hi, my friends and families! Sorry it took me long to write in English. I’ve been just too busy to sit at the computer and write…Anyway, how have you been doing everyone? I’m thinking of you all every single day. Has spring come yet at your place? We had snow today here in Tokyo. I can’t believe it. Isn’t it March already??? and “It’s fffffreeeeeeziiiiiiiing!!!!” (just for you, my friend!:)

Anyway….I have to write about Jun here, huh? Well, I will tell you about his OT training today. OT (Occupational Therapy) is a training for his hands. He started three months ago with stretching his both arms and hands equaly, and moving some beanbags from a box at his right to another one at his left.

In this three months, he has been practicing how to handle his spoon to eat, how to put on/ take off his clothes, and how to deal with all works in a bathroom…any sorts of things that he needs to handle to lead his life. Recently, he started to practice using chopsticks (though they are kind of special chopsticks for training, so I guess it’s much easier to use, but still!)

I feel like he should have some difficulty in depth perception. It is pretty difficult for him to reach his hand out for an object properly. It might be caused by his damaged eyesight, he might not be sensible that much, or neurons (or any other transmitters…whatever they are) in his brain can’t travel/communicate right each other. Doctors and therapists still struggle to find out the cause. I can totally understand that it is such a complicated problem and very difficult to figure out. It’s not something that you can measure numerically. Am I right, my Dr. fiance?:)

How I wish I could visit Jun’s brain for about 10 minutes to see how he is feeling, what he is thinking, and how he is seeing the world. When I told that to my mom, she said that “Jun will be so tired to have you in his brain for 10 minutes!! Poor Jun! You should be out in a minute or so!!” Well….mom….I think you are kind of off the point…but I’m sure we can keep our heads up because you are so silly!

Here is another story that shows Jun is truely mom’s son.

One day, his OT therapist shared some conversations that she and Jun had during the training. I was talking to her while we were letting Jun walk by himself (here I mean paddle his wheelchair by himself) ahead of us. She said that Jun told her he was super happy to see me and I was the best. I thought “Really?! I don’t think so…he should be happier to see his girlfriend and friends….” but I just asked him “Hey Jun…what do you want?” Soon after I asked him, he said “Good beef” He didn’t even look at me. Just keep paddling with a slight smile! Oh boy! We screamed and laughed so hard! What a silly boy! I can’t believe that he has some brain damages!! Actually he made a mistake. He should have told that to dad to obtain good beef, not to a poor sister! Ha!

I hope Jun entertained you tonight. Have a great week!

Always love
mihori

OT(Occupational Therapy:

Jun and his PT buddy!

Jun and his PT buddy!
Jun was standing by himself then!

It has been a while…

February 7th, 2010

Hi all! I’m sorry I have been so lazy to update here. It seemed like we made some of you worry about us, but we all are doing just fine! We are so busy with daily work and stuff… We really appreciate for your care so I will try my best to keep you updated! Thank you always for your heartful care and thoughts!

I’d like to share with you today about Jun’s rehabilitation. He is having all physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy for 1hour each everyday.

PT is his most favorite since he is the truely athlete! In PT, his therapist starts the training with giving massage to Jun. It looks super nice! I’m always jealous of him! Hee hee. The therapist says Jun’s muscle gets so tense very easily and it may give him some pains later on.

Jun needs storonger muscle on his hip to stand and walk right now, so he does some training to build those muscles. It seems like just a practice which he used to do with his teammates. The therapist and I like to make such an atmosphere to encourage him!

He practices to stay standing as well. It is amazing to see him standing. When he moved to this hospital, he couldn’t even stand with support.

At the end of the session, he always practices to walk. Sometimes he uses a walking frame; sometimes he doesn’t use one but the therapist supports him. It seems very difficult to walk for him since he can’t balance or control his legs well. I can see his progress everyweek though, so I’m not super worried about that.

By the way, Jun and his therapist are such a good buddies! I love to see them working together, and feel very thankful to have him as his partner. It is pretty amazing how funny they are together even though Jun barely talks. How can you be funny without any words?!? Still it’s a comedy! I’m very proud of my brother!!!! Great job Jun to make us laugh every day!!

I’ll write about OT next time. Have a great week!

Our goal!

January 13th, 2010

Thank you for your continuous thoughts and prayers!

It has been about a month since Jun moved to current hospital. We had a conference with his doctor the other day. She said his rehabilitation is going pretty well and Jun made a greater progress than she expected. It was good to hear that! Although we still have lots of concerns that we need to overcome, but we are pretty happy so far. We all set our goal together then; we want Jun to come home in the middle of March!! I believe Jun can make it happen. He is trying so hard on his training every single day which shouldn’t be easy for him. I am really proud of him!

Thank you again for your support. I can’t wait to tell you more good news soon!

Much love
Mihori

A Happy New Year!

January 5th, 2010

Never give up!

A Happy Belated New Year!
Last year was the hardest year for our family, but I feel very thankful that we are all here together to cerebrate the new year now. Thank you so much for your continuous prayers and support!! You all have been helping us to keep our heads up!

Jun came back home for a short visit over the new year’s holidays. Unfortunately, he couldn’t stay overnight, but it was still amazing. I bet he missed mom’s meal so much. He ate A LOT! We had a great holiday.

We will keep moving forward this year, and we will make 2010 a great year!!

We miss you and love you all!!!!!!

Jun, parents, and Mihori

Merry Christmas!

December 24th, 2009

Merry Christmas, friends and families! Today, I have a big news for you! Santa has come to our family! Jun started to speak!!!! He still mumbles because of lack of muscle around his moutn, but we can surely communicate!! It’s awesome! It seems he didn’t lose his memory. It’s super great because it was one of the biggest concerns that we had. YYYYYYAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!

He is doing great job at his rehabilitation everyday. He is making progress every single day. I can’t wait to see more improvement!

I wish all merry christmas! Thank you for being such a great person for us!

He has moved

I love driving:)

I love driving:)

He has moved to his new hospital on Monday. When he left the previous one, lots of nurses and his neighbor patient came to say good-bye, so he was pretty happy about that. In addition, he was thrilled for a car ride! Seeing his delighted face, we almost forgot what troubles he has.
At new hospital, he has a solid schedule with three different kinds of rehabilitation; physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. He was nervous during first couple of days, but it seems like he already made his “fan” at this place too. Tomorrow, they will have a christmas party on his floor. I am pretty excited to participate with him! 🙂
